Calprotectin

CLIA is a revolutionary and high-sensitive immunodiagnostic technique, that represents a huge step in diagnosis of both infectious and non-infectious diseases.

Calprotectin is a 36kDa protein from the S100 family, a group of calcium binding proteins. Calprotectin is derived predominantly from neutrophils, with a less contribution from other immune cells, like monocytes and macrophages. Calprotectin has an antimicrobial effect, and its concentration is proportional to the presence of any exiting inflammation in the gastrointestinal track, so it is a very useful biomarker of Inflammatory Bower Disease (IBD).

IBD is a result of an inappropriate immune response to intestinal commensal organisms in individuals with genetic predisposition, and provokes intestinal inflammation and ulcers (2). Within IBD, there are two forms: ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Symptoms of IBD are diarrhoea, abdominal pain and rectal bleeding. Although colonoscopy is the gold standard method to confirm IBD, is an invasive, expensive and time-consuming technique, so other tests based on biomarkers like calprotectin are firstly used to narrow down the possible patients.

CerTest CLIA detects calprotectin present in stool samples of patients with IBD, as calprotectin is present in high quantities and high stability in these samples. In addition, CerTest CLIA for calprotectin also allows quantification, as concentration of calprotectin is very important to evaluate the state of the patient.
