It is more common for Adenoviruses to cause respiratory diseases; however, they can also cause others such as gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis, cystitis, and rashes, depending on the Adenovirus serotype causing the infection. Patients with compromised immune systems are especially susceptible to serious complications from Adenovirus infection.
The different types of Adenoviruses are transmitted by direct contact, fecal-oral transmission, and occasionally through water, and can be spread through the air by coughing and sneezing.
Some serotypes are capable of establishing persistent and asymptomatic infections in the tonsils, adenoids and intestines of infected hosts. The most frequent manifestations of infection are common cold, fever, sore throat, severe cough, bronchitis and pneumonia.
